Tesla sold 82,432 China-made vehicles in November, up 14% MoM

Tesla China sold 82,432 cars made in the Shanghai Giga factory in November, up 14.31% from October and 17.81% down from some month last year. Those numbers include both domestic sales and export.

Tesla China doesn’t report monthly numbers. Fortunately, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) does it every month, revealing the performance of the Shanghai plant.

For Tesla China, it is much-awaited growth after two months of decline as the Shanghai plant has been under a lot of pressure. In September, it had to change tooling and adjust production lines for the facelifted 2024 Model 3 production and the China-only updated Model Y. Moreover, dozens of electric mid-size sedans made by domestic automakers hit the market last year to compete with Model 3, such as the new Deepal SL03, Huawei Luxeed S7, and new BYD Seal.

In 2023 (January – November), Tesla sold 853,603 China-made vehicles so far, 30% more than in the same period last year. The plant’s production capacity is 950,000 EVs annually, and it currently assembles only Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs.

Despite the price war in China, Tesla has shown confidence in the last months. In September, it was revealed that the updated Model 3 Highland is 12% more expensive than the older version. However, most of the new Model 3 production is currently exported outside China, and Tesla China sales rely heavily on Model Y SUVs.

In November, Tesla slightly increased the price of their cars four times. On November 9, the new Model 3 Long Range and Model Y AWD Long Range got a price hike of 1,500 yuan (210 USD) and 2,500 yuan (350), respectively.

On November 14, Model 3 RWD and Model Y RWD got a price increase of 1,500 yuan and 2,500 yuan, respectively. On November 21, Model Y AWD Long Range got another 2,000 yuans hike.

Finally, on November 28, Tesla increased the price of Model Y LR by another 2,000 yuan. The current prices of the Tesla lineup in China are as follows:

  • Model Y RWD: 266,400 yuan
    • 554 km CLTC range
    • 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds
  • Model Y AWD Long Range: 306,400 yuan
    • 688 km CLTC range
    • 0-100 k/h acceleration 5.0 seconds
  • Model Y AWD Performance: 363,900 yuan
    • 615 km CLTC range
    • 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.7 seconds
    • top speed 250 km/h
  • Model 3 RWD 261,400 yuan (35,800 USD)
    • 606 km CLTC range
    • 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds
  • Model 3 AWD Long Range 297,400 yuan (40,800 USD)
    • 713 km CLTC range
    • 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds

The Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV prices are almost on par in China since the 2024 Model 3 was launched in September with a 12% higher price than the previous version.
