MG this year celebrates its 100th anniversary. Now owned by SAIC the MG brand will premiere its new MG Cyber GTS concept at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
From the teaser images, we can see that the MG Cyber GTS is a 2 door coupe. At the front it seems to be largely the same as the MG Cyberster. From another image we can see very similar thick haunches as on the Cyberster and the MG Cyber GTS is almost certainly a hard top version of the convertible Cyberster.
Although MG is referring to this car as a concept, judging from the traditional side view mirrors rather than cameras we should expect that this car is destined for production and likely sooner rather than later.
Chinese media are pointing out that the car looks quite similar to a Porsche 911 with its low body and wide rear wheel arches. This comparison is also probably likely due to the strongly sloping rear roof line down towards a duck-tail-like end. At the front the car has a headlight and air intake design which is very similar to the MG Cyberster with similar aerodynamic elements and large air vents on both sides to enhance heat dissipation.
Given that the MG Cyber GTS is almost certainly a hard top version of the MG Cyberster we can expect that the powertrain will be very similar. The MG Cyberstar (see specs) is available in both single and dual-motor versions. For the single motor version, there is a choice between a 231 and 250 kW motor on the rear axle both of which deliver peak torque of 475 Nm. The dual-motor version retains the 250 kW motor on the rear axle and adds an additional 150 kW motor to the front axle which has two 250 Nm of torque. Acceleration time for the single-motor versions is 4.9 seconds, while for the dual-motor, it is 3.2 seconds.
As an entry-level car, the 231 kW single motor version of the Cyberster gets a smaller battery with 64 kWh capacity whereas all other versions use a 77 kWh battery pack. Ranges for the single-motor version are 501 and 580 km depending on the size of the battery pack. Meanwhile, the dual motor has a CLTC range of 520 km.
Although the MG Cyberster channels the two-door drop-top MGs of yesteryear, it is not a small car and measures in at 4535, 1913, and 1329 mm (l/w/h) with a wheelbase of 2690 mm.
It is likely that the MG Cyber GTS will feature conventional doors rather than the scissor doors on the MG Cyberster.
The 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed opens today July 11 and runs until Sunday, July 14. Goodwood Festival of Speed is described as the world’s largest automotive garden party and is held at Goodwood House in West Sussex in the UK. It was first held in 1993 and has become a favorite event for luxury and performance car producers to unveil new products.
