Pony.ai Slashes 2027 Robotaxi Cost to Under $32,000, Debuts L4 Autonomous Light Truck

At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, Pony.ai announced a major breakthrough in autonomous driving economics, revealing that the total cost of its 2027 fully driverless Robotaxi will drop below 230,000 RMB (approx. $31,768). Alongside this announcement, the company officially launched its fully automotive-grade, redundant L4 autonomous light truck.

Pony.ai Founder and CEO James Peng stated during the press conference that the sub-230,000 RMB ($31,768) price point—which includes the vehicle, the autonomous driving suite, and the battery—will significantly enhance the commercial viability and competitiveness of autonomous logistics and ride-hailing services across major Chinese cities. The company also plans to introduce an international version based on this model.

This cost optimization is driven by China’s maturing intelligent vehicle supply chain and Pony.ai’s continuous R&D iterations. By utilizing operational data and user feedback from Tier-1 cities, the company has refined its L4 system for mass production, effectively driving down hardware and integration costs.

Following the debut of its 7th-generation Robotaxi in April 2025, Pony.ai has rapidly scaled its operations. Within six months, the fleet was deployed in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, with the latter two cities already achieving positive unit economics. The company’s total Robotaxi fleet has grown to over 1,400 vehicles, serving a user base that has tripled over the past year to exceed one million.

To manage this scale, Pony.ai has implemented a standardized global fleet management system covering dispatch, charging, cleaning, and maintenance. Leveraging “virtual driver” technology, the fleet operates 24/7 to ensure consistent service stability.

Peng also detailed the company’s “Dual Engine Strategy.” This involves expanding the fleet and operational zones in core Tier-1 cities while replicating the business model in new markets like Hangzhou and Changsha, as well as international regions such as Singapore and Croatia. By the end of 2026, Pony.ai aims to provide autonomous services in over 20 cities globally with a fleet of 3,000 vehicles. This includes 1,000 Toyota bZ4X Robotaxis, which have already completed driverless testing and are set for commercial deployment.

In a significant expansion into logistics, Pony.ai partnered with CATL to unveil the world’s first automotive-grade, fully redundant L4 autonomous light truck. This vehicle shares the urban autonomous driving technology and operational infrastructure of the Robotaxi, aiming to slash costs for urban delivery and B2B services.

The autonomous light truck features an 18m³ cargo capacity and offers a range of 320-450 km, making it ideal for express delivery, supermarket replenishment, and cold chain logistics. It reduces freight costs per kilometer by 40-50% compared to manual driving. With a top speed of 70-100 km/h, the truck utilizes a fully redundant architecture for steering, braking, power, and sensors, designed for a service life of 600,000 kilometers.

Furthermore, Pony.ai’s 4th-generation L4 autonomous heavy truck has reached mass production. The company recently secured China’s first permit for driverless truck platooning, allowing for “1+N” autonomous transport tests on major highways connecting Beijing and Tianjin.

On the software side, CTO Lou Tiancheng introduced “World Model 2.0.” This AI foundation enables the system to self-diagnose and evolve by identifying technical weaknesses and autonomously collecting high-value data to optimize the model. Lou emphasized that a “Fail Operational” standard is essential for L4 autonomy, ensuring that vehicles can safely pull over even in the event of a system failure, thereby securing the future of large-scale commercial operations.
