Spy Shots: Is a Long-Wheelbase Leapmotor C16 on the Way?

Spy shots have emerged of what appears to be a long-wheelbase version of the Leapmotor C16. While the front section of the vehicle closely mirrors the current C16, the extended wheelbase and noticeably lengthened third-row area suggest a significant update to the model’s packaging.

The current Leapmotor C16 is a mid-to-large 6-seater smart SUV built on the LEAP 3.0 architecture. Launched on June 28, 2024, it is available in both pure electric and range-extended versions, with a price range of 155,800 to 185,800 RMB (approximately $21,500 – $25,600 USD). Positioned as a high-value offering, the C16 saw 78,000 units sold in China in 2025. However, sales have cooled in 2026, currently hovering around 4,000 units per month, signaling an urgent need for a product refresh to remain competitive in the cutthroat Chinese automotive market.

Despite heavy camouflage, the A, B, and C-pillar designs remain consistent with the standard C16. The front fascia appears to adopt the updated design language expected for the new C16, featuring a revised split-headlight configuration while retaining the lower air intake.

The most notable change is the stretched wheelbase and the significantly extended rear overhang, which is clearly designed to provide more generous legroom and comfort for third-row passengers. The rear retains the signature Leapmotor full-width taillight design. Visible exhaust pipes on the prototype confirm that this specific test mule is a range-extended variant. Notably, this early prototype lacks a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor and roof rails.

According to recent filing information for the updated C16, the range-extended model will continue to utilize a 1.5L range extender. While the engine’s maximum power remains at 70 kW, the electric motor output is expected to increase from 170 kW to 200 kW, with a top speed of 180 km/h. The WLTC pure electric range is slated for a slight improvement to 185 km. The pure electric version will also see a power boost, with the single-motor output rising from 215/220 kW to 230 kW, continuing to utilize lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology.
