Tesla China has updated the naming convention for its driver-assistance systems on its official website, rebranding terms like “FSD” (Full Self-Driving) to “Tesla Driver Assistance.” The term “FSD” has been completely removed from the Chinese site to comply with local regulations, which strictly prohibit the use of terms like “fully autonomous” or “self-driving” that could mislead consumers regarding L2-level driver-assistance systems.
The company has clarified that drivers must remain attentive and keep their hands on the wheel at all times while the system is engaged. This change follows the recent announcement on May 21 regarding the rollout of the supervised FSD version in the Chinese market.
Despite the rebranding, the price for “Tesla Driver Assistance” remains 64,000 RMB (approximately $8,850 USD). According to official descriptions, the package includes all features from the “Basic” and “Enhanced” driver-assistance suites. Once activated, the vehicle can handle most driving tasks with minimal driver intervention, though constant supervision remains mandatory.
This is not the first time Tesla has updated the naming in China. In March of last year, the company renamed its “Autopilot” and “FSD” suites to align with regulatory requirements and market communication standards. Tesla has been steadily building its local infrastructure, including a data center in Shanghai established in 2021 and an AI training center in Lingang, which became operational in February 2026. This allows for a complete local loop of data collection, storage, training, deployment, and iteration.
While Tesla announced on May 21 that China is included in the rollout for supervised FSD, the feature is still pending an over-the-air (OTA) update. During the Q1 earnings call, Tesla China has updated the CFO noted that the company is in close communication with Chinese regulators, aiming for full approval by the third quarter of 2026.
