BYD today celebrated a significant milestone with the rollout of the first passenger vehicle from its Brazilian plant in Camaçari, Bahia. This event marks a new phase in BYD’s global expansion strategy, achieved in just 15 months from groundbreaking to the first vehicle off the production line.
In July 2023, BYD announced its plans to build a comprehensive production complex in Camaçari, comprising three factories, with a total investment of 5.5 billion Brazilian Reais (approximately 1 billion US dollar). The new energy vehicle (NEV) production line at this base will manufacture both pure electric and plug-in hybrid models, with a planned annual capacity of 150,000 units. This initiative is expected to create 20,000 local jobs. Furthermore, BYD will collaborate with multiple local supply chain partners to build a localized industrial collaboration model, fostering the sustainable development of the NEV industry chain.
In the first quarter of this year, BYD’s sales in Brazil surpassed 20,000 units, securing its position as the local champion in new energy vehicle sales. By May, BYD had risen to fourth place in Brazil’s automotive brand retail sales rankings, capturing a market share of 9.7%.
In recent years, BYD has actively expanded its overseas industrial footprint. To date, BYD’s new energy vehicle presence extends across six continents and over 110 countries and regions worldwide. In the first half of the year, BYD’s overseas sales exceeded 470,000 units, marking a year-on-year increase of 132%. The company anticipates its full-year overseas sales will surpass 800,000 units in 2025. Moving forward, BYD will continue to steadfastly pursue a development strategy that combines internationalization with localization.
