Huawei & BAIC cooperation explained
In China, a lot of hi-tech companies are jumping into the car-making industry. For example, Alibaba and SAIC jointly run IM Motors, Baidu (Chinese Google) and Geely created the Jiyue brand, and Xiaomi develops cars independently. Of course, Huawei isn’t an exception to the rule. It started as a parts and OS supplier for Avatr and ArcFox. Now, it is actively developing cars with four Chinese companies.
First, Huawei has a collaboration with Seres (Dongfeng’s subsidiary). Together, they have created the Aito brand. Its model line comprises three crossovers: Aito M5, Aito M7, and Aito M9. Second, Huawei joined forces with Chery to create the Luxeed brand with the S7 sedan. Two other Huawei’s partners are BAIC and JAC (ex-Nio manufacturer). The recent announcement of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) revealed that the Huawei & BAIC brand will be called Stelato.
BAIC, which also assembles the Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan, is a contract manufacturer of Stelato vehicles. Huawei will sell Stelato-branded vehicles in its vehicle stores known as HIMA. The first Stelato car is the X4 mid-size sedan. It was recently exposed in China.
Stelato X4 spy shots
The spied Stelato X4 is covered with camouflage. However, it follows the design language previously adopted by Luxeed S7 and Aito M9. The X4 sedan has thin headlights and a single gauntlet-shaped taillight unit. Its front bumper has a sizeable trapeze-shaped air intake. Other features of the Stelato X4 are cameras instead of side-view mirrors, retractable door handles, and a LiDAR sensor on top of the roof.
The Stelato X4 has a sloped front end with a long bonnet line. Its A-pillars shift to the sleek roofline. Two more cameras are installed in the X4’s front fenders. This sedan has 10-spoke rims with aerodynamic covers to reduce the drag coefficient.
Inside, the Stelato X4 also follows the Luxeed S7’s styling. It has a small three-spoke steering wheel with a gear selector mounted on the steering column. Its center console has a large floating screen. The center tunnel of the Stelato X4 has two wireless charging pads, a hidden compartment, and an armrest. Its door panels have buttons instead of conventional handles. There is also a visible Face-ID sensor on the A-pillar.
The instrument panel of the Stelato X4 sits far behind the steering wheel. It means this vehicle probably doesn’t have an AR-HUD. It is a controversial decision since Huawei makes its own AR-HUD, which provides a 75-inch virtual image with a brightness of 12,000 nits.
There is no information about the Stelato X4’s powertrain. It will likely adopt e-motors from Huawei. For example, the previously launched Luxeed S7 sedan offers 4WD and 375 kW. The X4 can also adopt these electric motors. This sedan will hit the Chinese market in Q1 2024. Its price range will be around 300,000 – 400,000 yuan (42,250 – 56,320 USD).
