Hyundai has officially announced the entry of its dedicated electric brand, IONIQ, into the Chinese market, establishing a localized electric ecosystem dubbed the “IONIQ Universe.” As part of this strategic launch, the brand unveiled two new concept vehicles, the VENUS CONCEPT and the EARTH CONCEPT, marking their global debut. The first mass-produced model under the IONIQ brand for the Chinese market is set to make its global premiere at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show.

Over the next three years, IONIQ plans to roll out a diverse lineup of pure electric and extended-range (EREV) vehicles, spanning mid-to-large size segments and offering both SUV and coupe body styles. Since the launch of its first dedicated eco-friendly platform in 2016, the IONIQ series—including the IONIQ 5, 6, and 9—has achieved cumulative global sales exceeding 550,000 units.

In the “IONIQ Universe,” Hyundai positions the Chinese consumer as the “Sun,” with all future vehicles and services acting as “planets” orbiting this center. Consequently, all IONIQ models in China will be named after planets. The VENUS and EARTH concepts serve as the first two “planets” and represent the brand’s future design direction.

The VENUS CONCEPT features a striking “Brilliant Gold” exterior with a sleek, single-curve silhouette. It incorporates lightweight design elements, such as a frame-style roof, transparent spoilers, and racing-inspired center-lock forged wheels. The interior focuses on a driver-centric immersive cockpit, utilizing crystal-inspired ambient lighting and high-end suede and chrome accents.

The EARTH CONCEPT draws inspiration from the planet’s resilience, finished in an “Aurora Shield” color. It features a rugged, off-road aesthetic with rock-textured skid plates and exposed bolts, balanced by a glass roof and transparent frame. Its interior emphasizes a “breathing” design philosophy, utilizing soft air-module seats and subtle, nature-inspired lighting to create a serene environment.

To ensure success in China, Hyundai is leveraging local talent and technology. The company has partnered with Momenta to develop AI-driven autonomous driving solutions optimized for complex local road conditions. Furthermore, the brand will introduce EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) technology, combining Hyundai’s advanced internal combustion engines with electric powertrains to offer class-leading range.

Looking ahead, IONIQ has outlined a 2028 technology roadmap, which includes the development of “AI Cars” capable of proactive decision-making and active care, as well as the launch of a new NEV-dedicated platform with a focus on D-segment vehicles. The brand will continue to deepen collaborations with leading Chinese technology firms to enhance the intelligent user experience.
