In a sharp reversal of tone, Ford CEO Jim Farley recently called for a total ban on Chinese automakers entering the United States market. This stance comes despite Farley’s previous high praise for Chinese engineering; he famously admitted to driving a Xiaomi SU7 for six months and being reluctant to return it. Now, the head of the American automotive giant warns that the entry of Chinese manufacturers would deal a “devastating” blow to U.S. manufacturing, threatening the very foundation of the American economy and its workforce.

Farley emphasized that the sheer scale of the Chinese auto industry poses an existential threat. “China’s production capacity is sufficient to meet all of America’s automotive manufacturing needs and total sales volume,” Farley stated. “Given the economic impact, we should not allow them into our country. Manufacturing is the heart and soul of America, and losing it to these imports would be catastrophic for the nation.”
Beyond economic concerns, Farley highlighted significant technological and security risks. He pointed out that modern Chinese vehicles are equipped with extensive sensor suites, often featuring at least 10 cameras capable of collecting vast amounts of data. Furthermore, he argued that Chinese automakers benefit from massive government subsidies, creating an unlevel playing field and an unfair competitive advantage.
Currently, the U.S. imposes a 100% tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles, which effectively blocks large-scale market entry at this stage. In addition to these tariffs, the U.S. government is advancing new “connected vehicle security” regulations. These rules are designed to further restrict the application of Chinese technology through rigorous cybersecurity reviews and data privacy standards.
